Rare

Oil on Canvas

101 x 76cm

This painting began with a flower. I came across a flower shaped like a bird and found myself thinking about the rare and extraordinary things we encounter in nature. That led me to another thought: perhaps the rarest thing of all is the human spirit in all its strength, beauty and complexity. I wanted the figure at the centre of this work to feel both powerful and mysterious. There are layers throughout the painting waiting to be discovered, so I hope it rewards those who spend a little time with it.

Becoming

Oil on Canvas

102 x 102cm

Sometimes a painting begins with a clear idea. Becoming didn't.

As it evolved, I found myself wondering what this woman was becoming. A butterfly? More aware? More herself? Perhaps all of those things.

I deliberately left the answer open because becoming is different for each of us. For me, this painting is a celebration of growth, possibility and the quiet wonder of becoming who we were always meant to be.

Butterfly Girl

Oil on Canvas

83 x 117cm

When I was little, no matter what I painted, my mum would smile and say, "Can't you just add a butterfly somewhere?" I think she secretly hoped my work would become a little lighter.

So this one's for Mum.

Butterfly Girl celebrates whimsy, optimism and the simple joy of imagination. I'd like to think she'd be pleased.

Freedom

Oil on Canvas

90 x 90cm

Freedom is one of those things we all long for, although it means something different to each of us. For me, this painting isn't about escape. It's about that quiet moment when you stop living according to everyone else's expectations and begin living according to your own. She is free. Finally.
